Body Fat is Fuel: How to Use It

The key to burning off
those extra pounds
should always begin
with exercise and a caloric deficit. "Burn more than you consume". Sounds easy and to be perfectly honest with a little know how and some accountability, it can be.
But we at SFitnessPlans are nothing if not thorough, so what follows is a little step towards being optimal rather than doing just enough.
The system, is called ketosis.
When your body metabolises fats it makes ketones. Ketosis exists and functions when there is a sufficient level of ketones in the blood: this is when your body's primary source of energy is coming from fat.
How to create that environment
Cut the carbs! (whilst keeping the proteins and fats high) Once you deprive your body of sugar your insulin levels drop and your body will find that all important source of energy: fats.

Why it works
Sugar, more specifically glucose, works as an easy to find, instantaneous fuel. With the instant sugar fuel out of the way, and if your body is in a caloric deficit, it will start to eat its own fat.
Are carbs necessary...?
Yes.. if you are a professional athlete it might be beneficial to have a hybrid approach to fuelling your body.
But in reality for 99.9% of us who don't have to perform at a professional level carbs are not necessary, or in dietician speak they are non-essential.
Other benefits of ketosis include:
Energy levels: Without spikes in glucose your body has more consistent energy levels because you can use your body fat for energy (no sugar crashes or food comas).
Disease prevention, length and quality of life: Ketosis driven diets have been shown to decrease inflammation, reduce instances of Alzheimers and benefit sufferers of various types of cancer and diabetes.
Increased focus and mental acuity: Fat is a more consistent source of energy which is treated preferentially by the brain meaning longer, less fleeting focus.
Increased physical performance (in specific sports): Ketosis allows your body to use oxygen more efficiently, a benefit compounded by the lack of sugar crashes.
